Call of Cthulhu — KKN di Desa Sukasenang

You are final-year university students from a certain university in Jakarta, preparing for your mandatory KKN program. When the village assignments are announced, you discover you've been placed in Desa Sukasenang, a small village deep in the mountains of East Java, about 16 hours drive from Jakarta.

Your friends are envious. Sukasenang has become something of a legend among students - a "golden assignment" that everyone hopes for but few receive. Stories circulate of students who went there and returned completely transformed. Lazy students who barely attended classes suddenly became model scholars. Unmotivated students discovered burning passion for their studies. Troubled students found inner peace and direction. "It's like they become different people," your seniors often say, their eyes taking on a distant, almost dazzling when they speak of their time there. "The village changes you. Makes you... better."

The village head, Pak Bambang, welcomes KKN groups warmly. The community development projects there always receive glowing reports. Students return with perfect evaluations, glowing recommendations, and an almost evangelical enthusiasm for rural development work.

But as your ride winds through the increasingly narrow mountain roads for hours, past terraced rice fields and traditional houses, through small towns that grow fewer and farther between, you can't shake a growing sense of unease. The other passengers, local villagers returning home seem to watch you with knowing smiles. Their conversations, conducted in rapid Javanese, occasionally include words you recognize: "tamu baru", "perubahan", and something that sounds like "persembahan".

When you finally arrive in Desa Sukasenang as the sun sets behind the mountains, the entire village seems to be waiting for you. Dozens of smiling faces line the dirt road, and children scatter flower petals in your path. It's an incredibly warm welcome, perhaps too warm for a routine KKN assignment.

That night, as you settle into your simple lodgings, you notice something odd. The framed photographs on the walls show previous KKN groups, but something about their faces seems... wrong. Their smiles are identical too wide, too perfect, as if painted on. And their eyes everyone's eyes have the same vacant, dazzling expression.

Welcome to Desa Sukasenang, where personal transformation is guaranteed.
